Brian Wilson Presents Smile (Nonesuch)
There’s an old saying “If you live long enough,
you’re bound to witness anything”. To prove that
old adage, Brian Wilson
delivers Smile. Smile is a project that began in 1966 and finally
shelved in 1967. After an unheard of 85 recording sessions,
Wilson called it quits forever. As a matter of fact, he opposed
Smile’s release in any form, which only added to its mysticism.
For years Beach Boys’ fans gobbled up inferior sounding
bootlegs, just to have a glimpse of the legendary album. In
1967 Smile disappeared and Smiley Smile surfaced. Smiley Smile
lacked ambition and the eccentricity of Smile, although containing
several of the same songs (Good Vibrations, Heroes & Villains
etc).
The turnaround happened 3 years ago, Wilson had tossed aside
his psychological demons. He toured and played
“Pet Sounds” album in its entirety. Now it was time
to do the unthinkable, to finish Smile. No other Beach Boy was
used
in the making of this cd. Smile was completely rerecorded with
the Wondermints (Brian’s live backing band) and
remains true to the original dream. Smile more than lives up
to its promise. Thanks for the Smile Brian.
